OVERVIEW

For a year as a full-time remote designer at an Irish unicorn tech firm, I’ve worked on various types of projects—from product and graphic design to a strong focus on web.

My Challenges & Work Process

My Challenges &

Work Process

As a remote design contractor, the biggest challenge I've faced has been communication. The language difference is a barrier because it can lead to misunderstandings, where I may misunderstand what others mean, and they may not fully comprehend what I mean. Geographical distance also makes it tougher for me than for an on-site designer.

My Approach

I decided to make up for my disadvantage by putting in more effort.

When we communicate about the same thing, we often have different visualizations, and they're intangible. We only realize that we have misunderstood each other when we both see the same tangible thing – the designs on the screen.

What I do is make the intangible tangible before it's pumpkin time and turns into a problem.

Simply put, I will deliver the wireframe or hi-fi prototype as soon as possible, ensuring that everyone is aligned in terms of visual before the deadline. Of course, I will always clarify requirements when receiving a design request or before starting a project. But because each person's thought is invisible to the others, misunderstandings are always possible.

If time is really tight and not enough for hi-fi prototype, I will choose wireframe or any other way as long as I and the person I'm working with both have a tangible visualization to discuss on.

When it comes to final design, I always think of edge cases.

"What could go wrong in this screen: information, interaction, or input? What if the user quitted mid-flow? What section would scale in the future and make the current layout no longer suitable?…"

Listing edge cases during final design implementation can save lots of time, because there are edge cases that can only be resolved with a new design layout - especially with dashboard type like the Wayflyer's eCommerce benchmarks.

Until now, this is still an effective work process for me and teammates at Wayflyer.
